Game update: 13/06/17

We've waited exactly three weeks for it, but at last there is another update in Restaurant Story, and with it you are sure to get wet...

Introduction to water park themed goals

It is undoubtedly a summer theme, but despite there having been countless examples of such updates in years gone by, the sub-theme here is rather novel. A water park theme has lots of scope, especially in a goals update, which makes me excited to see what the game's developers have in store for us.

And the best way to find out is to get straight to the list of additions:

Tables:
  • Fish Fountain Table - 19,000 coins
Chairs:
  • Pool Noodle Chair - 15,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • Lockers - 26,000 coins
  • Umbrella Fountain - 20,000 coins
  • Floaty Kid - 22,000 coins
  • Lifeguard - locked by goal
  • Water Slide - locked by goal
  • Wave Pool Kids - locked by goal
Wallpapers:
  • Water Slide Wall - 8,000 coins
Floor tiles:
  • Rubber Ducky Floor - 8,000 coins
Appliances:
  • Bite Sized Oven - locked goal
  • Special Treat Machine - locked by goal
Counters:
  • Innertube Counter - 22,000 coins

My first thought here is that this is an expensive bunch of items. The prices of goal content has been creeping up of late, but this latest collection crosses a line of some sort in my book. If the quantities of table, chair and counter required in the quest match that of the last goal set then you'll be forking out 180,000 coins for these alone. It's not really fair on newer players who are still trying to climb the ladder, and it's not fair on older players who are trying to embark on an expansion expedition.

Aside from my economic gloom, things are looking good. The Lockers is a cool 2x1 floor decoration which is completed by having one of the doors half open, thus giving us a glimpse inside. This piece actually leaves me wondering if it may be worth having a go at creating a swimming pool theme, with a cafe ensuring that there is actually a dining element to the place. Anyone brave enough to blow some gems on the Blue Glass floor tile would have the best pool in town!

Also on the floor decor front we have the Floaty Kid and Umbrella Fountain. The former is 2x2 in size and contains what must be one of the happiest bots in the game's history! She's having a right good splash with her inflatable dinosaur, all in a giant inflatable pool, complete with arch. The only minor issue here is that the design of her swimming goggles is not quite right. At a glance they just look like ordinary glasses - perhaps a tint on the eyes may have helped?

The Umbrella Fountain is an odd concept, and doesn't really work for me. The central pillar looks to be a standard pipe, and although the water is flowing off the top nicely enough, the whole object is terribly blurred. It's been a while since we've had an item that suffers with this defect, but unfortunately it's in full bloom here. It's like it's not been rendered properly or has been scaled up. Hopefully Storm8 will take a look at it.

There's another fountain in this batch courtesy of the Fish Fountain Table. It features a red-scaled fish blowing out some water vertically to hold up a circular glass surface. It's very fantastical, but why not?! You won't see me using it for the bots to eat at anytime soon, but it could work well as a decorative piece for a watery landscape.

In contrast the Pool Noodle Chair does not naturally have me thinking of water. Yes, the name is a giveaway, but looking at the chair in isolation you'd never make the connection I don't think. It's not a great choice for a water park themed update, but it's bright colours will undoubtedly have their uses, none more so than for a kid's play area theme.

The Water Slide Wall is also liberal with its use of colour, but this time there's no doubting what the overarching theme of the update is. The decision to have the orange slide winding its way around the two straight slides was ambitious but seems to have been pulled off very successfully.

The Rubber Ducky Floor is undeniably cute (obviously!) but it's one of those tiles which when placed in volume is never going to do the business. Unless you want to have an army of rubber ducks lined up uniformly like some rubbery battalion of soldiers (and you don't because rubber ducks are supposed to be fun!) then it's difficult to see how this flooring can be implemented effectively.

All that remains of the readily available stuff is the Innertube Counter. I like it - the shape of the innertube is such that is looks like it's bulging with air. There's no doubt that it will float! The credit for achieving this has to go to the team in charge of lighting effects - the use of light and shade is superb and provides us with a well finished decoration.

The remainder of the additions can only be accessed by working through the goals, and you can find details on them here. As ever once I finish the quest I'll provide a goals content report with my thoughts on the unlocked decor and analysis of the unlocked recipes. Only then can we head for the lazy river. Until then we're all heading nervously up the steps to the tallest slide in the park!
