Game update: 28/11/17

When you play the game of Restaurant Story you win, or you end up with lots of spoilt food. Game of Thrones has landed!

Introduction to Games of Thrones themed goals

The TV phenomena previously made an appearance in Restaurant Story 2, and ever since I've wondered if the gamemakers may one day put together an update for the original title in the same vein. That day has arrived, and brings with it goals. Here's the full list of additions:

Tables:
  • Weirdwood Table - 19,000 coins
Chairs:
  • Grand Master Stool - 22,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • A Place of Ice 'n Fire - 20,000 coins
  • King's Guard - locked by goal
  • The Mad Dragon - locked by goal
  • The Lone Wolf - locked by goal
Wallpapers:
  • The Day's Wall - 1 gem
  • The Night's Wall - 9,000 coins
Floor tiles:
  • Wild Cobble - 8,000 coins
Appliances:
  • Oven of Light - locked by goal
  • The Wall Stove - locked by goal
Counters:
  • Dragon's Glass Counter - 15,000 coins

I can't deny it - when I saw the clipboard had returned to the left side of my screen my heart dropped. It's been a manic few days in the game and I really could have done with a little rest, having only made the final update to my Black Friday post earlier tonight. But alas that is not the Storm8 mentality these days. Instead it's full speed ahead with a rare case of a real world fandom being incorporated into the game. In fact this could even be a first.

It must be said that I am a big fan of Game of Thrones, and therefore discovering the theme of the update immediately perked me up after hiding behind the sofa at the sight of the clipboard. And just at a glance it appears that plenty of thought has gone into the naming of items and wording of the goals. It seems that the good people at Storm8 are also addicted to the Song of Ice and Fire.

Let's start the analysis with one of the most iconic elements of Game of Thrones, that being the Wall. Build many centuries previously to separate the legendary but dangerous White Walkers from civilisation, the Wall is a huge construction which spans hundreds of miles. And now you can recreate it on an all together different scale with The Night's Wall wallpaper. It's not got the same overwhelming sense to it, but it does have the cold blue colour and rugged yet solid appearance.

There's a second wallpaper for the taking too, although The Day's Wall will set you back 1 gem a time. It is assumed that this wallpaper will not need to be purchased in the quest. It's the same design as The Night's Wall but deploys a lighter tone of grey to give a less menacing and uncomforting look.

The Wild Cobble floor tile has made it's away across the Narrow Sea from Bakery Story, and features a cobbled pattern with snow and ice filling the gaps between the stones. Much like the two wallpapers, although introduced within a Games of Thrones themed update this flooring is fairly generic in nature, meaning that it will work a treat throughout the winter period. Just be wary of the 8,000 coin price tag which will cause costs to quickly escalate out of control when buying in bulk.

The Weirdwood Table has also migrated from the sister game, and pays homage to the weirwood tree which is seen within Game of Thrones. Maybe my eyes are bleary from too much time spent blogging over the past few days, but I think this table is of a low resolution, with the withering forms under the square table surface lacking depth. It's not been very well executed in my view.

Update: Thanks to jjs3307 for the correction - the Weirdwood Table isn't a Bakery Story crossover at all. It's the same design as the Gravestone Table introduced for Halloween last month, just with a slight change of colour! I have no problem with content making the leap from Bakery Story, but just repeating the same stuff within the same game is out of order!

The Grand Master Stool goes in a completely different direction with a book mounted on four legs. It's not a chair I imagine using very much going forward, but I do like the nod to the maesters of Game of Thrones who are highly intelligent scholars. In contrast to the Weirdwood Table, the book design is very detailed, with an intricate pattern in gold on the top.

On to the new counter, and the Dragon's Glass Counter brings a jagged and shining black box. It's not like any other counter in the game, and has a modern tinge to it which appeals. But you may wish to be careful about how many you buy (season seven spoiler alert!) - the Northerners will be campaigning to mine them if there's enough!

Of the stuff freely available to pick up in the market, all that remains is the A Place of Ice 'n Fire floor decoration. It's only 1x1 sized but is tall and fits in well with a lot of existing wintry decor I've accumulated down the years. I think it has appeared in Bakery Story too, or at least it stirs a faint memory in my brain!

The remaining items need to be unlocked via the goals before you can get hold of them, and therefore I will refrain from dissecting them until after I've obtained them myself, when I'll compose a goals content report. In the mean time you can get all the details on the goals in my dedicated post here.

First step of Game of Thrones themed goals

Update: There are three Christmas themed recipes have returned! There's no indication of how long they'll be back for, but the Cauliflower Casserole, Roasted Goose and Honeyed Ham are all available on the Basic Oven. Thanks to an anonymous commenter for the heads up!

I'm pretty excited by this update, but that is almost entirely due to my adoration of the TV series. At a glance it seems that around the community opinion is less favourable, with players having preferred the start of the festive run. I'm in total disagreement though - it's still November and if the next quest is released immediately after this one then most players should finish up with it just before Christmas. Plus you get a real feel of the winds of winter with this theme so it still works with the time of year.

Now I'm off to prepare a raft of subtle Games of Thrones references for the goals content report!
