Game update: 06/07/16

You know Summer has truly arrived in Restaurant Story when we get the traditional ice cream themed update!

Notification for sno cone themed update

There's a snow cone theme to this particular edition, with a range of content available from level 18. Without any further ado, let's peruse the additions in a neat little list:

Tables:
  • Cone Table - 18,000 coins
Chairs:
  • Sno Stool - 2 gems
Wall decorations:
  • Sno Cone Tiles - 8,000 coins
  • Spoon Straws - 8,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • Sno Cart - 50 gems
  • Sno Couch - 5 gems
  • Sno Cone - 32,000 coins
Wallpapers:
  • Sno Paper - 800 coins
Floor tiles:
  • Sno Tile - 800 coins
Counters:
  • Sno Counter - 3 gems

After the disappointing spread of stuff last week it's nice to get a more comprehensive update which includes decor for all the categories. All except one of course - following the euphoria of non-goal recipes returning last time out there's no appliance on this occasion. That's a shame, although back in the day standard updates without any fresh dishes were not unheard of, so as long as a new food is added very now and again I'm reasonably happy.

On to this theme, and it's clever of the game's developers to come up with something which is very much in the vein of ice cream but yet is slightly different. Having said that I have to admit to a lack of knowledge when it comes to these 'sno cones'. Here in the UK it's rarely warm enough to merit them, although they are quite common to find at carnivals or theme parks (not that we have many of them either!) It was at a theme park that I had my one and only experience of a 'slushie' and shortly afterwards was very nearly sick. That may have been the effects of a twisting roller coaster though...

Enough of my trials and tribulations! Here's a glimpse of the new content courtesy of an image provided by the Storm8 Blog:

The vibrancy of the new items can't help but bring a smile to my face. It's a Summery update if there ever was one, and the use of yellow and blue flooring in the teaser to simulate sand and sea demonstrates how well it will work in a beach setting. Definitely the ideal kind of update for the time of year.

Headlining is the Sno Cart which weighs in at a horrifying 50 gems. It's a beautifully crafted piece with the golden trim and boldly coloured snow cones, but the price is just repulsive. After a long period where there were no outlandish fees for floor decorations it seems we've turned a corner and headed down a dark alleyway. For a 2x2 sized item this is way over the top, and thus despite the good impression the design makes on me, I'm going nowhere near it.

At the other end of the gem item scale is the Sno Couch. Coming at just 5 gems, this 2x1 sofa might be mistaken for a rainbow if you've got your eyes screwed up. The colour range impresses, and the cones for cushions is clever, but the sparkles are not. They're actually present on all three floor decorations, and continue to bamboozle me. What makes Storm8 think we want glittering decor?

The Sno Cone is essentially an oversized version of the recipe we should have had. There's nothing wrong with it, except for the size making it difficult to place. Some artistic license may be necessary, unless you can locate a character to place behind it that would be willing to work their way through the whole cup!

In the case that the giant Sno Cone is shared between a number of people, the Spoon Straws may come into play. This wall decoration involves a large number of those funky spoons with really long handles being hung on the wall (that's what I see anyway as opposed to 'straws'). It's a nice enough piece, although the thinness of each spoon/straw makes it difficult to make out exactly what you're looking at. Nevertheless it's a decent candidate for kitchen walls if you have them.

There's another wall item too with the Sno Cone Tiles a purely decorative addition. It depicts snow cones on seven slanted square tiles. To be honest it's not for me - it looks a little random for my liking, which probably shows I've not learnt to accept the pop art update from last month!

Luckily I do warm significantly more to the Cone Table, Sno Stool and Sno Counter. The full spectrum of colours is delivered on the top surface of each, and in a surprising twist the sparkle which has been included on the first two actually works. This is undoubtedly cheery furniture which could be utilised to create a really fun restaurant. It's just a shame that only the table can be purchased for coins.

Thankfully our final two newly introduced entities are both only 800 coins each. The Sno Paper wallpaper strikes me as somewhat 'safe' in comparison to the blasts of colour and dynamic nature of the rest of the fresh content. The plain green backdrop is too sedate and even the snow cone prints are timid. I can't help but feel that this wallpaper was cobbled together last minute...

On the other hand I adore the Sno Tile. It's got a real free-form appearance with colours just dropped on it with no predetermined pattern to be seen. It makes me think of different shades of paint dropped on the ground and ever so slightly mixed. I expect we'll be seeing plenty of this flooring around the community as players find cool and exciting ways of using it.

That covers everything, except for the weekly sale which this time is on a crate.

Notification for Cruise Box sale

The Cruise Box is available at 50% off for a limited time, meaning that it can currently be opened for just 12 gems. I don't recall this being a particularly popular box when it was originally released in June 2013, and somehow suspect it won't be the most popular of the crate sales we've had.

The lower ranking prizes are really disappointing in this one which is a bummer considering the high quality of the leading prizes. The Indoor Flow, Midnight Jacuzzi and Cruise Playground all look fantastic, but the risk factor is too great. Having said all that, if there was ever a time to try out a box of mixed rewards this was it - two chances for the price of one essentially!

And so we've reached the end. I'm not entirely sold on the floor or wall decor in this update, but I do give a strong thumbs up to the table, chair and counter. And a box sale is always nice even if it isn't one that draws you in quite so much. Personally during this run of Summer themed box sales I'm really rooting for the Carnival Box. Please Storm8, make my Summer!
