Game update: 27/07/16

After some energetic updates of late which have seen us out camping, strutting down the boardwalk, and binging on snow cones, we have a much more serene collection of new content this week.

Notification for Curio Crate

The Curio Crate is the only addition, with this box costing 24 gems a pop. Within are eight prizes of varying quality, with only your luck defining whether you get something you love or something you hate.

This is an unusual crate in that it really isn't all that eye-catching. I've never seen a box that has such a uniform set of designs within, and with everything having a dark wooden chassis, this is a selection of stuff that oozes class.

Before I dissect the items any further, let's take a look at them all lined up in an image taken from the Storm8 Blog:

Items from update as shown on Storm8 Blog

They really are ordinary! I quite like the grounded style which promotes grandeur, perhaps because it's so rare. So often boxes are filled with bright and noisy content, and although such crates can be fun, it is nice to have a change.

That said, there is plenty of colour to be had inside each cabinet. It's difficult to get a proper look based off the teaser alone, but the vibrant tones on display are certainly distinctive up against the dark wooden frames.

When it comes to working out the rarity of each prize, it's a lost cause. Everything is either 1x1 or 2x1, with the three smaller cabinets presumably the fourth prizes. After that it's anyone's guess - if you have opened the box and can provide details on the position and name of any of the decor do feel free to comment below!

Something really positive about the Curio Crate is that it does come with a guarantee of sorts. You know exactly what type of decoration you're getting if the leap of faith is taken, and that's not something we can say often when it comes to box openings. But in the same train of thought, the lack of variety does give the box a stale feeling. Imagine you open it a couple of times - no matter what you get there's going to be a sense that you've got nothing more to gain since the prizes are all so similar.

Personally I won't be opening it. It's by no means the worst crate of the age, but for what you're getting the price is too steep. These items are all worth half of what's required in my view, simply because they're not scene stealers. Each one would fit nicely into the main eating section of my restaurant (if I had room!) but would only serve to add to the ambience rather than create the ambience. I'll be interested to see how many players do choose to take the plunge.

On to the weekly sale, at this time it's the turn of a floor decoration already in the market.

Notification for sale on Midsummer Pool

The Midsummer Pool is 20% off for a limited time, meaning it is down to 44 gems from 55. It's not been given a special banner in the market, nor has it been shifted to the front of the floor decorations tab, so you'll have to go digging to find it.

At 44 gems it's still very expensive, but in contrast to the Curio Crate's goodies, this item is a whopper. It's 4x4 and is truly beautiful. With a willow draped over a pool home to lily pads and lotus flowers, and butterflies dancing around the bright greenery, it's a classic piece. There might be a world in which I'd purchase the Midsummer Pool, but being a stingy type when it comes to gems, I'm going to pass. Definitely one some players will gobble up though!

And with that we've concluded our July updates for this year. Hopefully there are more Summery updates to come in August, although themes based around back to school and the Olympics surely have short odds. Whatever's coming next, I'll be writing about it!
