Game update: 29/08/17

Another update has landed in Restaurant Story, and to the surprise of no-one, it's a 15 day goal set!

Introduction to animal water park themed goals

Seven of the last nine updates - dating back to the start of May - have been quests, with all of them coming with a 15 day window of opportunity. The remaining two updates were both sales, with existing content marked down for a limited time. Believe it or not we've not had a 'regular' non-goals update for more than five months.

Most of the goal sets in recent weeks and months have been a success in my view, but there is undoubtedly a staleness has been creeping in. There was a time when we'd get one quest, two regular updates and a box every month - how I long for that carousel of variety once again!

Anyway, goals it is, and after a water park themed event in mid-June it appears that some animal exhibits have been added so we are returning to the park. There's a range of new stuff, so here it is outlined in full:

Tables:
  • Marine Table - 19,000 coins
Chairs:
  • Marine Chair - 15,000 coins
Wall decorations:
  • Towel Rack - 14,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • Porpoise Juggling - 50,000 coins
  • Sea Trainer - locked by goal
  • Turtle Stack - locked by goal
  • Penguin Slide - locked by goal
  • Whale Fountain - locked by goal
Wallpapers:
  • Ocean View - 8,000 coins
Floor tiles:
  • Bubble Tile - 8,000 coins
Appliances:
  • Nori Machine - locked by goal
  • Marine Oven - locked by goal
Counters:
  • Blowfish Counter - 2 gems
  • Deep Sea Counter - 21,000 coins
  • Piranha Counter - 21,000 coins

So to say there is a 'range' of additions was to underplay it - there are 15 items have been introduced. I've no idea what the record is, but I suspect it's not far north of this.

Playing a significant role in that count are three counters. The Blowfish Counter and Piranha Counter are similar in design, just with a different fish skulking inside the glass box. The same foundation applies to the Deep Sea Counter, although it has a darker complexion since the anglerfish within prefers to provide its own light source. Just as an aside, this is not a specie to be looked up in the dark shortly before bedtime!

The counters fall into my glass box grumbling bracket, but they get a pass since they are very much appropriate given what is depicted inside. The fish themselves are well done, although I'd have liked to have seen the piranha look a little less bored! The global issue with counters such as these of course is that you really don't want to plonk a sloppy plate of Biscuits and Gravy on top.

Sticking with marine wildlife, the Porpoise Juggling is a 3x3 sized floor decoration which can be purchased from the off. Two porpoises can be seen within a round water tank - one is working a beach ball while the other is swimming alongside a goggles-wearing bot in flippers. I'm mightily impressed that Storm8 are giving this piece away without a padlock requiring removal. With a little jazzing up it could have passed as the final goal prize, so to be able to bag it for 50,000 coins is a big bonus.

From the confines of a water tank to the deep blue, the Ocean View wallpaper is a fairly nondescript effort. It uses a very small palette of colours and only very simple shapes to create a wave pattern. It's not a classic wallpaper, but it's lack of detail makes it that bit more flexible. In truth though, I think I'd have liked it to be a little more blue - you can barely see the white sun or clouds against the very pale backdrop.

In contrast the Bubble Tile makes the pattern very clear. Lots of white circles packed in on blue-green make for a distinctive flooring. Where and when I'll use it is currently unclear, but it does have a clean appearance which appeals.

There's a hint of that same blue-green tint on the Towel Rack too. A wall decoration, this consists of two small and neatly folded piles of towels on a wooden shelf. It's minimalist and uncomplicated like the wallpaper, but there's a strange charm about it, at least from where I'm standing. This would certainly have gone well with my pool theme a little while ago, and it's a good fit for this update.

We're left with the Marine Table and Marine Chair, both of which are on the expensive side considering that buying them will almost certainly be necessary in the goals. It's taken until the very end, but we finally have a Bakery Story crossover, with this pair appearing in the sister game as the Blue Tile Table and Blue Tile chair. We could make placards and take to the streets in rage, but instead I think we should commend the gamemakers for making a good choice of item to haul across the divide. The ocean colours are put to good use, and any crazy players who had previous forked out heavily for the Pool floor tile are now laughing all the way to the market.

We still have four floor decorations and two appliances to ponder, but with these hidden from view for now, my analysis shall have to wait until the goals content report. The fact that there are four pieces of floor decor strongly suggests to me that there won't be a repeat of the bonus sidesteps we saw in the last quest to win a rare prize. Given how enraptured I was by that innovation in Saturday's Suggestions Box, you won't be at all surprised to hear me express disappointment that it is not being repeated. However I retain hope that such a feature does become a frequent inclusion.

Update: After I was tucked up in bed last night a limited time sale was released!

Notification for back to school themed sale

There are 22 items included in what is a back to school themed discount event which lasts until Tuesday. This includes six boxes available for 12 gems, although only the School Crate could really be described as relevant to the supposed theme. The Futuristic Box, Classic Kitchen, Football Chest, Action Chef Box and Carnival Box are the others marked down. It's not a sale to set the pulse racing, but it is appreciated all the same.

That does it for now. It's mostly good things I've had to say so far, and therefore these goals look like they're on their way to a winner. Having had one water park themed update this summer already helps the cause too, since there will surely be scope to blend together content from both updates. Until that goals content report, feel free to occupy yourself with my dedicated post here on all the inner workings of the quest.

  1. I'd really hoped we might get the Water Table and Chair from Bakery Story with these goals, but the ones we did get are a very nice choice as well :) And three counters! I hope we don't have to buy all of them for this goal D:

I guess we interpreted the final prizes differently - with four locked-by-goal decorations, my immediate thought was that one of them would be the side-goal prize. However, if Bakery's recent goal is any indication, it looks like highly-requested re-release items might be on the prize plate, so one never knows! :)

I'm rather disappointed with the sale though - with two consequent water-based goals this month, I would've loved to see a complementary sale offering more water-like items to have been really able to flesh out the theme. It would've been a great opportunity for the crab goal content re-release, and a few other items to have gone on sale :( It's a pity that didn't happen.

    1. I can't believe the Breakfast Buffet is up for grabs in Bakery Story! I paid 80 gems for it so kind of have mixed feelings at everyone having a free shot at it. But I guess that's where I've paid the premium to essentially have early access (by a couple of years!)

I've just added details on the sale which for some reason was released a while after the update itself. I tend to agree - I feel like we've had a school themed sale before so I'm struggling to get excited. A water themed sale would definitely have been more exciting! :)
