Game update: 24/12/14

It's Christmas Eve! Santa is on his way so there's nothing more you can do to grab his attention with your funky Christmas decorating. Instead it's time to turn to New Year celebrations!

Notification for New Year update

That's right, for the first time in the game's history, we've got a New Year themed update before Christmas is even upon us. This gives a whole week to ready our restaurants for seeing in 2015 in the grand manner. Here's the usual list of all the new content, which is available from level 21:

Tables:
  • New Year Table - 7 gems
Chairs:
  • New Year Chair - 7,500 coins
Wall decorations:
  • Party Banner - 15,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • Refreshment Table - 30 gems
  • Disco Ball Fountain - 65 gems
  • Party Cart - 50,000 coins
Wallpapers:
  • Sparkly Wallpaper - 7,000 coins
Floor tiles:
  • Dotted Tile - 5,000 coins
Counters:
  • New Year Counter - 10 gems

When it comes to the floor decorations you'll need to scroll past the sale offerings to find them! The TeamLava Blog offers a look at all the items in this release:

Hmm. I should be delighted at a theme I really wanted done justice getting a prompt going over. But the prices on show here are a real turn off. Unlike last week the weighting is slightly in favour of the coin additions, but it's the numbers attached to the gem buys which are mind-blowing!

Let's start with the most expensive of the lot. The Disco Ball Fountain is a behemoth of an item, but at 65 gems is a real premium product. Clearly there are similarities to be drawn with the Snow Globe Fountain added seven days ago, but in fairness the design team have gone out of there way to change the look. However this doesn't cover up the fact that over the last few months we've now had five serious fountains added. That's more than necessary in my opinion, especially when all but the festive one have been really dear.

The high costs don't go away with the Refreshment Table. This buffet is a really nice piece - anyone else spot the Starfish Biscuits from Bakery Story situated on there?! There's plenty has been packed into this decoration, and the sparkle of the tablecloth is appealing too. But it's just not affordable, especially for a 2x1 sized item.

Therefore I along with many others will be making do with the coin option, namely the Party Cart. Not that that is a bad thing. This is another table of treats which includes the Hamburger Sliders from the Outdoor Grill. The glittering of the golden tablecloth is beautiful and the bottles of champagne are carefully worked. The inclusion of the '2015' across four cards clearly ties this decoration to this particular New Year, but I can see myself using it again in 12 months anyway!

Now for some more overpricing. The New Year Table is 7 gems a time which is a shocker. It's the third most expensive table currently offered in the market, and is just too heavy an investment if you want several of it. It's a real shame because like the two glitzy floor decorations there's a mesmerising shimmer to it. And the New Year Counter joins the legion of 10 gem counters which I won't be purchasing. This time the shimmering finish backfires in style - since it's been done all over the fabric texture is lost. Instead this counter looks like a large lump of granite!

Fortunately the remainder of the new stuff is available for coins. The New Year Chair is a decent design and crucially doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The Party Banner is a sophisticated sort of bunting which could work really well in many scenarios in addition to New Year. Regular readers will be well aware that I do like flexible items, so I'm definitely buying up a few of these!

And joining the banners on the wall is the Sparkly Wallpaper. Once more we've got a highbrow finish and an ambiguous piece. This is a quality wallpaper which is already being pasted into my place as we speak! Your floor option in this update is the Dotted Tile. I'm not so keen on this one - the yellow dots are quirky but the choice of a plain (and bright) white for the background is ill-conceived. It's just too in your face when placed in bulk so I'll pass on that one.

There aren't any new recipes to work on this week, although you can still prepare the Countdown Cookies on the Basic Oven if you're after your New Year fix!

It should be pointed out that there is a high probability of a seasonal content removal in early January (there usually is) and all the stuff in this update will most likely be included. So if there are things you're thinking about forking out for I urge you to do so sooner rather than later! But of course you will because there's no point in decorating for New Year after the event...

Meanwhile the Christmas sale is still going strong. There are 13 days to go at the time of writing and it looks like the prices aren't going to rise as time passes like they did in the Black Friday sale. If you're still pondering whether to purchase gems with real money I'd suggest holding off just in case there's a 40% off deal to be had on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. There isn't usually but then again there isn't usually a sale like this at all!

I may not have bought gems, but I have been spending them savagely! The Crystal Room, French Cafe Bike, Pie Table and Ice Cream Truck have all been added to my collection via the sale for a total of 77 gems. I've got enough to bag the last item I'm eyeing, the Winter Clydesdales, but am being overly cautious just in case there are more Winter themed decorations to come.

The fact that I've been able to procure so many items and still have gems leftover is largely thanks to the sheer number of supplementary goals for other TeamLava games. I've quite literally been bombarded in the last fortnight, with Candy Blast Mania, Cupcake Mania, Hidden Objects and Bingo all popping up with Christmas editions worth six gems for installation. Plus there have been a number of completely new games giving the chance of even more gems, these being Treasure Run, Fish Frenzy Mania, Fairy Tale Wonderland and Monopoly Bingo. I'd like to think of this as TeamLava's Christmas present to us, and I for one am very appreciative of it!

But there's also one other new TeamLava title which interrupted my gameplay with an advertisement only today:

In-game advertisement for Restaurant Story 2

The time of reckoning has arrived! I've already reported on the recent appearance of Restaurant Story 2, but this is the first time I've received the fateful prompt. It's a magical Christmas present, but the question is, will I be trooping back to the shop demanding a refund? Time will tell!

And with that, I will bid you all a very merry Christmas! Have a lovely time everyone and make sure to check in between courses tomorrow for a special look at The Garlic Tree dressed up for Christmas!
