Suggestions Box (Dec 2015)

Every month I list five things I'd like to see added, altered or abolished from the game. Because even though my long time of playing Restaurant Story clearly shows I love it, that doesn't mean it's perfect. Some of the ideas I'll air will be significant game changers while others will be low-key and irrelevant in the eyes of many of you readers.

You can share your own suggestions too via the comments. If I like them, I may even include them in the next instalment!

In no particular order, here are this month's entries...

#136: Add matching tables and chairs

Recently many of the tables and chairs which have been added to the game have not been of the same theme, and thus combining them has almost been a non-starter. The most recent table and chair are a prime example - the Icicle Table and Snowy Chair just don't work as a pair, and that's frustrating.

Icicle Table and Snowy Chair

It's particularly annoying when you consider the scores of matching combinations we have had in the past. It used to be very rare to have a table and chair introduced which didn't come hand-in-hand, and I think the majority of the most well received ones have been those which come as a pair.

So I'd like to see the game's developers return to the old format of tables and chairs which marry up. I'd have thought the use of similar designs and colours would actually make this easier to do than coming up with completely unrelated concepts. So there's really no reason why it can't be done!

#137: Introduce small and cheap gem pack

I've recently noticed that the cost and content of the real money gem packages in Restaurant Story differ from those in some of the newer Storm8 titles. Taking in Restaurant Story 2 as an example, you can purchase a small pack of 20 gems for just 79p (in the UK version).

20 gem pack in Restaurant Story 2

Now I understand the value of a gem differs between the two games and 20 gems in RS2 doesn't correspond one-to-one with 20 gems in the original. But there certainly isn't any package remotely comparable in the original, with the cheapest being a £3.99 buy.

I'm asking the gamemakers to consider a cheaper bundle in the original game. Something like 12 gems for 99p would be really enticing and could make all the difference in converting non-buying players. Such packages are so attractive since they don't require a major investment but can come in very handy if you're just short of funds to purchase a coveted item. Definitely worth considering.

 #138: Add table decorations

When you enter a restaurant are the tables usually bare? Of course not, there tend to be cutlery, plates, wine glasses, napkins, menus, condiments and candles.

It would be great to have the opportunity to choose a collections of bit and bobs to place on the tables when not in use. A new tab could be added to the market specifically for tabletop decorations, thus opening up a whole new potential stream of revenue for Storm8. You could choose cheap white paper napkins or posh royal red napkins; grubby tumblers or elegant wine glasses; a candle on a stick or a fancy candle holder that yields a lovely warm glow.

You get the picture. This is a whole area of restaurant design which up until now the game's developers have completely neglected, yet covering it would give us a chance to really add some character to our diners, as well as make them unique.

#139: Allow requesting of excessive parts

At present you can only send part requests via the appliance construction window, and only if you are short on the part in question. I can understand why this is the case, but it would be nice to be able to stock up on parts in between new releases.

I'm advocating a new function within the gift list, where below each part is a button which offers the opportunity to send requests. This would allow us to get ahead on quests and amass a larger collection of spare parts for a rainy day.

Admittedly this one doesn't do much for Storm8's business, but then again I doubt much revenue is generated directly from players purchasing gems to gain missing parts. This suggestion is more about making things easier for the players, and I feel it really would.

 #140: Add more constructible decorations

This one is based on a post a while back by regular contributor Whipped Cream over on the Storm8 Forum. Right now there are only two constructible decorations in the game, namely the Steampunk Arcade and Steampunk Globe.

Constructible decorations

Update: The Robo Dog is of course another constructible decoration! Thanks to Monkey House for the correction!

These were both added a good few years ago, and it seems that constructible items are very much a thing of the past (excluding appliances of course). Why is this? There's something quite exciting about getting the parts together to build a decoration, especially when there aren't the time constraints that come with goal appliances.

So let's see some more constructible buys. Such a move would allow us to get rid of some excess parts, something which is all the more notable these days given how the old regular parts have fallen by the wayside in favour of new additions. Plus I think it unlikely that the gamemakers would release a constructible part for gems, so we could be looking at a guarantee of coin additions.

  1. I'd like to add a suggestion! We used to get a "notice" similar to the constant notifications to upload new Storm 8 games, ... a notice whenever new items are added to the game. I have mastered all appliances and look forward to the Goal times. But recently they have been adding random new appliances! I didn't even know about it. Stumbled accidentally during goal time on a few new ones! Plus, they have started putting the new appliances WAY down the line, searching for them is a pain. A notification of any new items would be awesome, and let's keep them in the front of the line! Thanks!

    1. I like it! For some reason we only tend to get notifications now for goal and box updates, with nothing for the regular ones. It doesn't affect me since I'm always on the ball every Wednesday for the update, but I understand that many players will not realise what they're missing.

New appliances do tend to be at the start of the list when first released, and are moved after two weeks. Unless you're referring to the goal cookers which are often hidden away - regardless of what you're saying it's certainly an issue that needs addressing!

Thanks for your contributions! I'll take note of them! :)

  2. I have been through as many Suggestions Boxes as i could find to prevent doubles. If there is any i appologize.
Theres one i found in the Box of april 2015 but wanted to mention this one again;remove prizes from expired goals!

I also want to suggest more collectables, i am done with Golden Utensils.
Maybe even add collectables to win some gems.

The gift section should be organized better. For instance, a tab for knobs (!!), a tab for building parts (screws, motors etc.), a seasonal tab. And a tab for new appliances.

I sometimes get pop ups about expired goals. Those goals are completed by me but it still leaves me confused. Are they really completed? Or is it a way to shake gems out of my pocket. You can't click out of it either.

I also would like a "tip" button next to the visit/gift button so i can visit my neighbors again in case their tables were full.

Customers to the restaurants should be dressed for the season. They wonder in wearing t-shirts and sneakers all year around. I want to see hats and moonboots for this time of year!

Requests from my neighbors sometimes don't show up. I discover someone needed something 3 days after they sended me the request.

I think it's an idea to be able to see and fit items for gems even if you dont have enough gems at that moment to buy the item. That way you can decide if you want to buy the gems for real money to purchase the item.

When a "theme" comes out i want more possibilitys for decoration seperate from the boxes. Speaking of wich, the risk to buy a box and get something small and silly should be adressed to.
Box prizes should all be decent and worth the 24 gems.

I would love more outdoor items, benches, lights, garbage bins, fences, bushes, etc.

Bigger tables were mentioned before but i want to add big round tables to that, were you can put your chairs around.

    Thanks for reading.

    1. Wow! So many great ideas Jantiene!

I particularly like your ones about having the bots dressed for the season and the preview of gem items prior to purchase.

A couple of points - would the tip button suggestion not have the same function as the visit button? Unless tapping tip actually leaves the tips, which would be fair enough if you've already went to the effort of visiting the neighbour that day.

And I've never had a pop up about a past goal. I have heard of players getting them, although not when they have completed the quest in question. Are you sure you completely finished the goals being advertised?

Finally, the reason why requests from neighbours sometimes take ages to show up is because they've already reached the limit for the day. So it carries over to the next day, and the process repeats. So sometimes you won't get the chance to accept a request for several days - it's more the fault of the neighbour than yourself!

Thanks again! I will definitely put your suggestions into action in future editions of the Suggestions Box. :)

  3. Great! :-)

With the visit/tip button i mean the button in the list of neighbours (clearly misspelled by me). Not while visiting their actual restaurant.
I thought it was handy to work from the list instead of constantly visiting and see tables still full? Or forgetting to re-visit cos you can't see anywhere if you tipped or not.

I know for sure i had goals completed when i see the rewards that i already have. Some goals...not sure.
In anyway, it should stop popping up, it's confusing. If i, or anyone else missed a goal have that one popping up. But it's prob some bug as i understand now.

Thanks for explaining the belated requests. Hereby, sorry for sending your request 3 days late... :-)

    1. Don't worry about responding late to my requests! Over the years I've built a great network of neighbours, so am rarely short of supplies. And now you are now one of those great neighbours!

I understand your tip button idea now! :)

  4. And happy and proud to be! :-)

Living in the Netherlands with English not being my native language it's sometimes difficult to express what i mean.

Anyway, you got the idea, a tip button that fades when you have tipped as it does when gifted.

    Enjoy your evening :-)

    1. They were added in a Valentine's Day update in 2014. Here's the link:

It doesn't look like there was any floor tile or chocolatey decorations in there - surely they could have had some chocolate sculptures?! :)

  6. I'm fond of the restaurant story and playing it almost every day during last half a year and going to play it much longer. But there is 1 thing that disappointing me - difficult and slow process of obtaining gems. And now when I've read a post about Gem Dispenser for IOS players, I have only one question: is there any chance that Android players will get an opportunity to obtain this upgrade either?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's now five months since the Gem Dispenser was introduced on iOS, so the chances of it ever appearing on Android are sadly quite slim.

Although earning gems is a slow process, there are plenty to obtain. There are now over 550 recipes have appeared in the game, giving well over 1,000 gems alone. Then there's chances to earn more by mastering the collectible collections and downloading other Storm8 games when prompted.

You just need to be patient! This is the kind of game which is a long-term 'investment' and you need to be willing to persevere with it! :)
