What makes a good neighbour? (part 2 - gifting)

The interaction with other establishments plays a large part in making Restaurant Story the game that it is. Over time you will add many neighbours who you can visit, tip and gift, as well as request parts from for building certain appliances. But how can you be a good neighbour?

Today my focus is on gifting. There are many gift items available which you can send one of to neighbours daily. There is no limit on how many neighbours you can cast a gift to each day, but you can only receive 20 gifts per day.

News tab of Messages menu showing pending gifts

So what should you be gifting to your fellows? Well, like with tipping, player preferences come into play as do present circumstances.

The second of these conditions is a reference to when there have been goals recently released. New goals mean new appliance(s), and thus a high demand for players to send the components relevant to building the new appliance.

Otherwise it really is up to you and your neighbours. Some players post what they want you to gift on your or their own wall. Personally I find this slightly irritating as a 'gift' is something you shouldn't be asking for!

But I do have three points which should do the business of making you a good neighbour with regards to tipping:
  • If you have neighbours who are still very new to the game, they are more likely to appreciate a gift of food, as they may have problems keeping their counters covered in dishes due to a lack of appliances.
  • Older players may prefer to receive basic parts (namely Fuses, Gears, Knobs, Metal Sheets, Motors, Nozzles, Paint, Screws, Springs and Wiring). This is because they want to replace Basic Stoves, Ovens and Grills with their Easy counterparts which require no additional taps for preparation. I fall under this category as I've regularly built Easy appliances, and it's nice to have lots of the necessary parts already in the bank.
  • The final piece of advice is the most useful - gift neighbours the same item as they request to you. Clearly if one of your neighbours requests a Motor they are building an appliance that requires Motors! So give them an extra little boost by not only accepting their request but also sending them another as a gift.
The third point really is worth emphasising. I really appreciate my neighbours who go to the bother of gifting me components that I've already sent a request for.

Bacon and eggs trimmed and scrambled

One of the first recipes you will come across in Restaurant Story is Bacon and Eggs via the Basic Stove.

Previously this dish cost 100 coins to cook, took 1 hour to do so, and then produced 1 coin per plate for 300 plates, meaning an income of 300 coins.

Now it takes just 3 minutes to cook, with a more modest 60 coins for customer sales after costing 20 coins to set off. With only 10 servings at a time, that equates to a mighty 6 coins per plate.

New stats for Bacon and Eggs

This is a random change really, as Bacon and Eggs has been a mainstay of the game from the start.

But that doesn't mean it's a bad change. It means that mastering the dish if you haven't already done so will take much less time. Plus if you have the full complement of 18 appliances, and are of the disposition to sit and tap for hours on end then Bacon and Eggs could be a good call for boosting your coin count.

This is because 3 minutes goes into one hour 20 times, and thus you can cook 18x20=360 batches in an hour. Multiplying this by the 40 coin margin of the dish (60-20) gives a net profit per hour of 14400 coins.

That's above average I believe, and with 7 XP for each batch cooked, would also give a seriously healthy 2520 XP per hour.

However sitting playing the game all day without a thought for anything else ain't good for you on several accounts, so don't!

Game update: 24/04/13

My hopes of a prolonged Mexican theme have been dashed! This week TeamLava have released an update which takes us to the theatre.

Notification for theatre themed update

There aren't many items on offer, but here is the list all the same:

Tables:
  • Film Reel Table - 2 gems
Chairs:
  • Theater Chair - 45,000 coins
Wall decorations:
  • Green Curtain - 4 gems
  • Blue Curtain - 4 gems
  • Red Curtain - 2,500 coins
  • Purple Curtain - 2,500 coins
Flooring:
  • Red Carpet - 1 gem

A mixed bag really. The curtains are a nice addition, and go nicely around a window to pad out the wall, although I'd be reluctant to spend 4 gems each on the green and blue ones. When I saw the red floor tiles I had a moment of joy as I've wanted a plain red carpet for a long time, until seeing that it comes at 1 gem each. To cover a large amount of flooring would thus cost a small fortune.

Those with a retro themed restaurant (or section of their restaurant like me) may wish to purchase one or two things though. Everything goes nicely with the retro items, particularly those from the 50's Diner Box.

I'm tempted by the Theater Chairs, which look slick despite the high price tag, and would fit well into my retro area. But I've spent 8 gems on Diner chairs for that section so will grudgingly pass on this occasion.

And for the first time that I can recall, there's no new floor decorations.

The TeamLava Blog has a screenshot containing all of the new content:

New content as shown on TeamLava Blog

Note that the counters shown in the above image are not new - they are Ruby Counters from Valentine's. Likewise the light fitting next to the door is the Valentine's Candelabra from February.

There is also a new recipe available on the Basic Stove, the Giant Pretzel:

For the Basic Stove

This new dish is listed under the lunch tab and is positioned at the very start of the list for now. It's good to see a new recipe simply being added to the existing appliances rather than a new appliance being unleashed that requires building.

I'm surprised there aren't more new recipes to be honest, what with the cinema theme. Specifically I'm wondering why the theatre mainstay popcorn wasn't included - it would go great with my Popcorn Cart!

What's for sure over the next few weeks is that I'll be looking out for community members with a theatre added to their restaurant, complete with a Television of course!

App update: 23/04/13

For the first time in quite a while, there is a new update to the Restaurant Story app available for iOS users such as myself.

Restaurant Story app update on iTunes store

As you can see above, the update only includes one element - 'ENHANCED GRAPHICS for iPhone 5 Players'. Now my iPod Touch is only a third generation device, so although I can download the update, it has had no visible impact on my interface. Only players using a fifth generation iPod Touch or iPhone will spot any changes.

And I have learned that those changes are pretty simple. The image on the screen is no longer cropped. In other words the vertical black strips on either side are gone. This means the whole screen is now in use!

I find it staggering that such a situation even existed on fifth generation devices when it didn't on older devices such as my own. But there you go.

This app update was almost across the board as far as TeamLava's story games go. Bakery Story, Castle Story, Fashion Story and Pet Shop Story all got similar updates too.

Stay tuned for news of tomorrow's weekly in-game update tomorrow!

What makes a good neighbour? (part 1 - tipping)

The interaction with other establishments plays a large part in making Restaurant Story the game that it is. Over time you will add many neighbours who you can visit, tip and gift, as well as request parts from for building certain appliances. But how can you be a good neighbour?

Well, I'm going to start by focusing on tipping. It's a strange art in the sense that it doesn't really lead to much (except sore fingers). In the main it is about exchanging tips with community members who you may then opt to pick up as neighbours.

Tips on tables waiting to be collected

But after that it is difficult to see the benefit of continuing to leave tips for them. Each tip received gives 10 coins and 1 XP point. Unless you're a very new player, this is peanuts.

So this is where player preferences come in. Not every player is going to be interested in tipping their neighbours daily (especially if they've got a lot of neighbours) so the key is to find players who match your needs.

If you can't commit to leaving tips every 24 hours, then don't add someone who makes a point of posting on their wall that they will delete anyone who 'doesn't tip for three days' or who 'falls below a three star rating'. Otherwise the relationship is destined to end on a sour note.

On the other hand if you like to tip every day and expect the same in return, then stick to three and four star players. Also, I suggest exchanging tips for a few days to ensure that the player you're dealing with is a regular and will tip daily before committing to becoming neighbours.

As for me, I give up 15 minutes every day to tip my neighbours, but am not overly concerned about the favour being returned.

In general, the key is to find restauranteurs who suit your personal tipping preference. This can take time and patience, but can lead to greater satisfaction.

And remember when getting disgrunted because Joe's Bistro hasn't tipped you back, it's only a game!

Game update: 18/04/13

After two weeks of Spring related updates including a set of goals, we are moving on to a Mexican theme. This update is a day later than was planned (it was supposed to be released on Wednesday but was delayed due to some 'issues').

Notification for Mexican update

This is a good choice of theme in my opinion, since there are plenty of Mexican-related items TeamLava could throw at us. Although I do wonder if this was supposed to come out around the time of the Western theme. As always, here is the full list of new content:

Tables:
  • Fiesta Table - 3 gems
  • Twirling Table - 2 gems
Chairs:
  • Fiesta Chair - 12,000 coins
  • Twirling Chair - 14,000 coins
Wall decorations:
  • Sombrero - 10 gems
Floor decorations:
  • Perro - 16 gems
  • Mexican Dancer- 25,000 coins
Wallpapers:
  • Cinco de Mayo - 5,000 coins
Flooring:
  • Tile Mexicana - 1 gem
Counters:
  • Twirling Counter - 10 gems
  • Fiesta Counter - 40,000 coins

Both sets of tables and chairs are cool, so it's a shame that the tables cost gems. At least the chairs are not too expensive compared to some of the recent chair releases.

Meanwhile the Sombrero is a must for a Mexican theme, even if the 10 gem price tag may put many (including myself) off.

What I may go for though is the Mexican Dancer. as I've said before, I love having actual people in my restaurant, and she's got the moves to have a stint in The Garlic Tree dancing along to the String Quartet!

Mexican Dancer moving in beat to the String Quartet in The Garlic Tree!

Now for some educating. Perro is the Spanish word for dog - I don't think the dog available here is any particular breed although it is wearing a little green hat! If you already own some of the dogs and cats currently on the market then the Perro will be very attractive, even at 16 gems.

Another learning curve (at least for someone in the UK like me) comes in the possible explanation for the dog's hat. May 5th is Cinco de Mayo, a holiday celebrated in the US and Mexico in honour of Mexico's heritage. This leads me to believe that we could be getting another batch of Mexican themed updates in each of the next two weeks leading up to the celebration.

If we do, there's plenty of Mexican recipes could be added in addition to the already existing Burritos and Quesadilla. Personally I'd love to see fajitas added to the game! Plus there's lots more decor choices such as cactuses and something relating to bullfighting even.

So keep your eyes peeled for more Mexican stuff in the coming weeks hopefully!

The Garlic Tree refurbished

After a long period of planning, I've finally redesigned the layout of my restaurant.

A few weeks ago I posted some details about this upcoming refurbishment and included an image of the planned new layout.

Planned new layout of The Garlic Tree

The key component in my refurbishment was an expansion to 19x22. Costing 3,500,000 coins and requiring 40 neighbours, it took a while to fulfil these demands, but I soon got there.

However the Spring goals delayed the expansion as I had to fork out some funds to purchase certain items for them. But having reached the final stage of those goals, I'm now ready to expand and refurbish...

The Garlic Tree before expansion and refurbishment

The Garlic Tree after expansion and refurbishment

The final result is pretty similar to the plan above. You'll clearly spot that the tables and chairs are not positioned identically. I altered their layout to maximise the number of punters I can accomodate at one time.

One not so obvious difference is that I don't have an extra space either side of the elongated ponds before the dividers. This is because the customers tended to walk down the far side of the foyer instead of in between the ponds. As a result the Steampunk section is slighly bigger than intended, while there is extra space for more counters (very useful).

Another deviation from the plan is that the chef and Host Table are now to the right of the door with the chef actually in the kitchen where he should be! I did this due to a shortage of space on the other side of the Foyer - the Lobster Tank and Grand Piano are cumbersome as well as elegant.

As far as comparisons to the previous set-up go, much of it remains, such as the centre-piece of the four pillars with food served all around, the kitchen section and the table tennis section.

Meanwhile my Steampunk and Autumn/Thanksgiving sections have made a comeback having been forced into storage by a lack of space previously.

The first major change is the foyer section.

New Foyer section in The Garlic Tree

The entrance door is now positioned centrally rather than on the corner, with two indoor ponds flanked by Flamingos and Lotus Flowers leading guests to the main posh section. The Lobster Tank is retained, while the Grand Piano has moved from the posh section to here (mainly due to a shortage of space).

Also, you'll spot a new 50's diner area.

New retro diner section in The Garlic Tree

This isn't my favourite themed area, but having had most of the items in storage for quite a while, I felt it was about time that they got an airing. The Diner Table is the reward for completion of the 'Yummy Ingredients' part of the collectibles tab, so I've got plenty of them to use! The 50's Chef is 65,000 coins which is a sound investment in my view. The two motorcycles were expensive though - the Teal Vintage Motorcycle (the one on the right) cost 115,000 coins while the Yellow Motorcycle used up 32 gems. It was the purchase of this second motorcycle which set off my pursuit of a retro area.

Finally the Popcorn Cart was a 4th prize in the 50's Diner Box.

Award of Popcorn Cart from 50's Diner Box

I was hoping for something larger, but have grown fond of the Popcorn Cart despite its 1x1 size. For a while I pondered a second dip into the 50's Diner Box but in the end opted not to - there isn't space for any more stuff anyway!

My issue with this new layout is a decrease in tables and chairs. This means that I can't seat all of the initial customers (cue lots of angry red thought bubbles!) and thus my customer satisfaction rating and cash flow both take a blow. Effectively I've sacrificed efficiency for beauty.

The best thing about this rearrangement of decor was being able to accomodate more of my themed sections - now the only previously premiered areas not on show are the Asian and Valentine's sections. I've also got an outdoor area on the go which received a boost earlier this week following the latest update. I've no idea when I'll get it out (as it's likely to be pretty big).

And this brings me on to my final point in this post. Despite now being just four expansions short of maxing out, I'm still lacking space! So I'm going to get my head down and keep saving up for further expansions - 5,000,000 coins for the next one!

Game update: 10/04/13

Today's update is a small one, but there is a glorious twist which I'll soon get to!

Notification for picnic theme update

The Spring theme is continued with the focus on picnics. As the notification implies, there is a new box which contains a variety of picnic related items. But the big surprise is that all of the items are available out of the box as floor decorations!

Floor decorations:
  • Flower Basket - 15 gems
  • Picnic Basket - 15 gems
  • Picnic Menu - 25 gems
  • Picnic Painting - 25 gems
  • Picnic Party - 70 gems
  • Picnic Prep - 40 gems
  • Picnic Puppy - 15 gems
  • Pinwheel Dance - 40 gems
  • Playful Parasol - 15 gems
Boxes:
  • Picnic Surprise - 24 gems

For a image of all these items together see the TeamLava Blog. It has to be said - these are all super items.

A significant point to make here (before we all get too excited) is that these items could be available out of the box for a limited time only, so if you want to grab one, I suggest doing so between now and the next update (presumably next Wednesday).

So, we can assume that the distribution of the items correspond as follows:

15 gems = 4th prize
25 gems = 3rd prize
40 gems = 2nd prize
70 gems = 1st prize

Therefore this is a fantastic opportunity to get hold of a 2nd prize item without the risk of ending up spending a shedload of gems to obtain one. Instead you have to splurge 40 gems - but are guaranteed the 2nd prize. This is exactly how I got my String Quartet on Black Friday last year.

So what will I do? I've already commented that I'm planning to go for an outdoor area, and have 40 gems in the bank. Should I go for two 15 gem items and have some left over? Or how about blowing them all for an item of 2nd prize quality?

Well, I don't think the Picnic Prep resembles something you would actually see in a garden (more like in the kitchen) while the Pinwheel Dance is a strange looking thing. Also taking into account that the Garden Pond will take up a lot of space (when I finally complete the goals and get it), I'm going to rule out the two 40 gem items.

Instead I'm buying two smaller items - I'm plumping for the Picnic Painting (25 gems) and Playful Parasol (15 gems). Both provide a character for my restaurant (which I do like) while still being elegant and sophisticated additions. Here they are in all their glory, even if they're inside at present:

Picnic Painting and Picnic Parasol in The Garlic Tree

And so I'm back down to zero gems. But a beautiful garden section is now in the offing...

Follow up on Spring Stove

As part of the Spring update and the Spring goals from last week, we got a new appliance - the Spring Stove.

Predictably this is a constructible appliance, requiring 5 Picnic Baskets and 5 Spring Leaves to build. These are both new components which can be found at the very end of the gift list.

So after a little help from your neighbours, what joys does the Spring Stove behold? Well, there are three recipes:

First recipe on Spring Stove

Second recipe on Spring Stove

Third recipe on Spring Stove

So all of these new dishes are quite short in the length of the waiting time. Consequently they yield relatively small quantities of plates with the 250 servings from the Braised Lamb being really modest for a 6 hour recipe. This reminds me of the uneconomical combinations for the foods on the Fire Pit Grill.

To add to the negativity, I think these dishes look pretty unappealing. The Zucchini Soup in particular is a slimy shade of green which I would typically associate with Halloween. Meanwhile the Snow Pea Risotto has what appears to be revolting (in my opinion of course!) bacon jerky carelessly strewn over it - not what you'd expect of a sophisticated risotto.

But the fact of the matter is that that I am clearly reading too much into these new delicacies, and should focus my thoughts on the 6 gems available for mastering these dishes - 3 of which will be obtained just from completing the Spring goals!

Spring 2013 goals (in full)

As part of the Spring update, Restaurant Story has a new set of goals dedicated to this wonderful time of year! The first step, entitled 'An Old Friend', is pretty simple:
  • Accept Spring Flower
  • Serve 8 Fruit Salads

Spring 2013 goals step 1: An Old Friend

To accept a Spring Flower, just tap the Accept button. Meanwhile the Fruit Salad is a dessert available to all players under the Basic Stove and takes 15 minutes to cook. As a result you'll get by this goal soon enough.

Then, just like with the Asian goals last month, the Spring goals split into two strands. In order to complete the goals in full, you will need to work at both strands. For example, the second strand requires the purchase of Spring Bloom Chairs which can be unlocked only by completing the opening step of the first strand. To view details of the second strand, scroll towards the bottom of this post.

So starting with the first strand, we are met with 'The Essence of Spring':
  • Buy 8 Spring Vine Wallpaper
  • Buy 20 Spring Meadow Floor Tiles
  • Ask 10 Community Members for Fresh Water

Spring 2013 goals strand 1, step 1: The Essence of Spring

Note that for the first two requirements here, you can buy any wallpapers and flooring to complete the goal. Meanwhile, to request Fresh Water tap the Ask button and choose some reliable neighbours. By completing this goal, you will unlock the Spring Bloom Chair which is necessary for the second strand of goals.

Next up is 'Show Me Spring':
  • Serve 12 Garden Salads
  • Have 1 Garden Archway
  • Buy 2 Counters

Spring 2013 goals strand 1, step 2: Show Me Spring

The Garden Salad is another Basic Stove recipe (listed under lunch), and as a 30 minute dish, won't take long to get done. Like with wallpapers previously, any counters will do the trick here, so stick with cheap ones! Finally, the Garden Archway is only available after completion of Inferior Ingredients (strand 2, step 1), and costs 64,000 coins. The reward here is the unlocking of the Spring Stove appliance and one is given to you for free - they'll be needed very soon...

After getting those Stews served, you are faced with 'The Green Thumb Guide':
  • Build 2 Spring Stoves
  • Prepare 30 Zucchini Soups
  • Serve 30 Zucchini Soups

Spring 2013 goals strand 1, step 3: The Green Thumb Guide

The Spring Stove is the new appliance which came with the Spring update and was unlocked in the last goal. It requires the collection of 5 Picnic Baskets and 5 Spring Leaves to build - both of these are new components found at the end of the gift list. The Zucchini Soup is an ugly looking broth aboard the Spring Stove which takes 2 hours to cook. I suggest building multiple appliances for two reasons. Firstly they only need 10 parts to construct so you can quickly amass three or four of them, and secondly they are needed in three further goals.

After being drowned in soup, a third strand of goals is opened - view it at the bottom of this post. Elsewhere, prepare to be doused in risotto courtesy of 'Under Pressure':
  • Prepare 40 Snow Pea Risottos
  • Serve 40 Snow Pea Risottos
  • Buy 2 Bird Houses

Spring 2013 goals strand 1, step 4: Under Pressure

The Snow Pea Risotto is another new recipe on the Spring Stove and is a 4 hour dish. Once more, this recipe is rather unappetising, but let's just get on with it! The Bird House is a wall decoration costing 20,000 coins so that's 40,000 coins for two.

Completion of those risottos unlocks the Garden Pond which is a requirement in the final goal, 'Go For the Green':
  • Prepare 50 Braised Lamb
  • Serve 50 Braised Lamb
  • Buy 1 Garden Pond

Spring 2013 goals strand 1, step 5: Go For the Green

The Braised Lamb is the last of the new recipes on the Spring Stove. It takes 6 hours to cook, so you'll be able to do a batch overnight, meaning it won't take much longer to complete than the risotto goal. Also required is the purchase of a Garden Pond - at 100,000 coins this is quite an outlay, although it is a quality item (not least with its 3x3 size) so is a sound investment in my opinion.

Finishing this goal brings a conclusion to the Spring goals, and you are awarded a green plaque for the wall. This seems like a bit of a let down for a final prize, but I suspect this is how all future goals will finish, meaning you can build up a wall covered in plaques to show off your achievements!

The second strand of goals starts following An Old Friend (step 1) and has just one step called 'Inferior Ingredients':
  • Serve 10 Stews
  • Buy 5 Spring Bloom Chairs
  • Buy 5 Spring Bloom Tables

Spring 2013 goals strand 2, step 1: Inferior Ingredients

The Stew is on the Basic Stove, this time under the dinner tab. However it takes 2 days to prepare. The Spring Bloom Tables cost 16,000 coins each, so that will be 80,000 coins spent in total. The Spring Bloom Chairs cost 18,000 coins apiece meaning they are 90,000 coins in total. However these chairs cannot be unlocked until completion of The Essence of Spring (strand 1, step 1). Don't be too disheartened though, because fulfilling this goal will unlock the Garden Archway. There are no further steps in this strand.

After stirring up the soups in The Green Thumb Guide (strand 1, step 3) a third strand of goals appears, entitled 'Feeling Friendly?':
  • Add 2 Neighbours
  • Visit 10 Community Members
  • Leave 20 Tips

Spring 2013 goals strand 3, step 1: Feeling Friendly?

This is a basic goal, and I believe the first step simply requires the player to have added two neighbours at any time since I already had it completed before even opening the goal. Visiting community members and leaving tips are simple enough, so you can rake in the 2 gem reward with ease! Again this is a single goal strand, and in this case has no item reward or aid for progression elsewhere in the goals - just take the free gems and run!

Game update: 03/04/13

With Spring upon us we have an update blooming with colour, natural beauty and goals!

Notification for Spring theme update

After a month of Asian themed stuff, this one is extra refreshing.

Here is the comprehensive list of new content for the first week of April:

Tables:
  • Spring Bloom Table - 16,000 coins
Chairs:
  • Spring Bloom Chair - locked by goal
Wall decorations:
  • Bird House - 20,000 coins
Floor decorations:
  • Garden Archway - locked by goal
  • Garden Pond - locked by goal
Wallpapers:
  • Spring Vine - 5,000 coins
Flooring:
  • Spring Meadow - 4,000 coins
Appliances:
  • Spring Stove - locked by goal

So all of the new items either cost coins or are locked by goal. Which is great. With four items as goal prizes, I expect that there will be plenty to do for the goals. And it explains why Easter was a non-event in Restaurant Story - the game's developers have been working hard at getting the goals ready. For full details of the Spring goals, click here.

Introduction to Spring goals

As for the coin content, everything looks really nice and provides a brightness that is characteristic of Spring. I was already considering a garden section for my restaurant having invested in lots of Astro Turf (1 gem each!) a while back along with Garden Tables and Chairs. However I suggest holding back on purchasing any new stuff just yet, as you will probably have to buy a few things as part of the goals (and I'm even more certain of this because of the lower prices). The two floor decorations to unlock appear to be wonderful items which will look sensational in a peaceful and flourishing garden area.

Something else to observe is that two new gifts have been added to the component list - the Picnic Basket and Spring Leaf. Presumably these will be needed to build the Spring Stove once unlocked.

As for my expansion which I was preparing to carry out tomorrow? It will have to wait! I've not been cooking so far this week so that I can run down my counters ahead of refurbishment, and instead building more Basic Ovens, Basic Stoves and Drink Machines. Looks like I'll need them!
