Picking apart the parts

I had anticipated that this weekend would be all about polishing off the latest set of goals and drawing up a content report. But with the August quest still pending I thought it would be nice to review the current situation with regards to parts.

The last audit was back in January, when the Metal Sheet and Screw were endorsed as the most common parts needed to put together constructible appliances. But even then there was a clear indication that the so-called 'basic' parts were becoming less prevalent, with newer generic parts such as the Sturdy Wood and Purple Knob being commonplace.

I'm sure long time players won't have have missed the fact that not only have the basic parts continued to be less frequently occurring, but brand new parts are on the rise. They seem to come every month, sometimes being used only for a single goal set and rarely again.

Let's put that statement to the test by doing the count. Below is a list of the parts which have appeared in more than two appliances since my last update seven months ago:

Part Number of
appliances
Number
required
Mallet 7 38
Spring 6 32
Screw 6 29
Golden Stake 5 23
Bib Tube 3 17
Ink 3 13

It's a short list, which reflects the introduction of so many new parts. The likes of the Heart Knob, Pocket Watch, Drain Pipe and Sugar Knob have all popped up during the period in question but not gone on to become regulars.

It's the Mallet which tops the list, despite only being added in mid-May with the railway themed update. It has been a requirement for seven of the eight constructible appliances since then, making it the MVP (most valuable part!)

The Golden Stake has also garnered influence quickly. It was introduced at the same time as the Mallet, and has featured on five cookers.

As for the basic parts, it's the Spring and Screw which appear most, each having popped up on six appliances. They are by a country mile the most used basic parts. Indeed, the Wiring and Fuse are the only other basic parts to have appeared since mid-January. That means a whole host of seemingly useful parts such as the Gear, Knob, Nozzle and Paint have actually been worthless over the last few months.

So based upon the findings, the Mallet is the most suitable part to be sending your neighbours as a gift. Of course that's by no means set in stone - there are enough other frequent parts that it's probably healthier to rotate the parts you send. And players are always looking to build older appliances (particularly Easy cookers) so all those Gears you get sent might yet come in handy!

What is looking certain at present is the addition of new parts with each goal set. The last eight quests have included at least one new part, so getting yourself well prepared for the goals is pretty much impossible. But that means there's still a challenge to the goals, which is exactly what we want, right?!
