Halloween 2013 recipe report

This year's initial Halloween update was a cracker, with loads of new content, a new set of goals, and a massive ten new recipes!

At last I've gained access to them all, so let's take an in-depth look at the new dishes, starting with those that are freely available on the basic appliances...

The Basic Stove has three new recipes:

Pumpkin Soup has since had its data altered - click here for more.

The Pumpkin Soup is the sixth 7 hour dish on record, and the fifth released this year. It beats out the others for portions and profit but is pipped by the Flower Salad and Airline Lunch (both Basic Stove) for XP. Generally speaking, 118 XP for 7 hours work is a good return - many 8 hour recipes fail to achieve this. Likewise the number of portions measures up well, but if you're after big profits you'd be better off with Pumpkin Cheesecake (Basic Stove) or the Breakfast Dog (Basic Grill). Overall a good pass though.

On to the Ghost Peppers, which are in the competitive 4 hour bracket. It ties for the fifth worst portions with Seaweed Salad (Sunken Stove) offering a frankly rubbish 350, while there are a wealth of recipes which yield significantly more XP. And to top things off, the profit margin is the sixth worst, again tied with the Seaweed Salad! Once you've got this one mastered, give it a wide berth.

Lastly, the Devilish Eggs is a relatively rare 3 hour dish, but not a good one. On a pro rata basis it is slightly better than the Ghost Peppers, but that counts for very little as shown above. Among 3 hour recipes, it's tied for third worst for portions, tied for sixth worst for profit and is third worst for XP. Enough said.

Next up for a thorough going over is the Basic Grill, which boasts one new dish:

Handburger has since had its data altered - click here for more.

You've go to love the Handburger. Unless you're served one in a restaurant that is!

As for it's stats, you've got to love those too! Grouped with it's fellow 12 hour recipes, the Handburger is an outstanding all-rounder. It's second best for portions after Chicken Tenders (Basic Oven) and for profit after Tiramisu (Basic Oven). And it is the runaway leader for XP. In fact, the 151 XP for cooking this 12 hour dish is more than you get for cooking some 1 day recipes! Remarkable.

Please note that these four recipes across the basic appliances are likely to be removed from the game at the start of next year as they are seasonal content, so try to master them for the two gems before then!

Let's move on to the two appliances which are unlocked by completing the goals, starting with the Bewitched Oven:

Thank goodness TeamLava's debilitating policy of applying the same XP to all the recipes on a new appliance regardless of duration was limited to the Old West cookers.

The Scary Chicken Fingers are inferior among it's 2 hour rivals, especially on the profit and portions fronts. It's saving grace is a top six spot for XP, but I'd recommend the 51 XP for the NY Strip Steak (Basic Grill) instead, especially if you're going to cook across many appliances at once.

Meanwhile the Mummy Dogs are an improvement on the new Ghost Peppers but like their Basic Stove neighbour, are still pretty poor. There are a lot of 4 hour dishes, and many are just so much better than this one. Take a look at the Garlic Noodles (Basic Stove) or Smores (Basic Oven) for real quality at this level.

Closing this appliance out are the Fried Frog Legs. It is initally locked even after the Bewitched Stove is unlocked, but is released further along the goals. Froggy's data is similar to the Fried Chicken off the Old West Oven, just with a higher XP gain. The 68 XP is still nothing special, and to show just how unimpressive this recipe is, let's compare it to the Pumpkin Cheesecake. The cheesecake gives double the profit, double the portions, and almost double the XP. Ouch.

Finally, the Condiment Lab has three experiments, excuse me - recipes - on it:

Firstly we've got the Dry Ice Float. All round this isn't a good dish, with an average XP rating and outright poor portion and profit values. Kiwi & Cake (Basic Oven) and Fish Sticks (Orange Deep Fryer) are the model recipes at 6 hour duration, although both are under par on XP - if you want to advance levels then Escargot (Basic Stove) is the best bet.

Next in line are the Jack'O'Apples. Only after you complete the Dry Ice Float goal does this recipe become available. This one continues the recent trend of adding 9 hour dishes - it is the fifth this year, and all have come since the end of May. Unfortunately the others tear this one to shreds across the board. And inevitably this only gets worse when the 8 and 10 hour recipes are thrown into the ring too. In fact the Jack'O' Apples have similar stats to the Fried Frog Legs, which got an 'ouch' from me, so let's leave it at that!

The Radioactive Sundae is the tenth and final new recipe, and is the second to have a 12 hour duration in this update. This one is undistinguished in truth (and will probably make you ill). The 900 portions is amongst the lowest in the 12 hour bracket, and the profit is mediocre. The 93 XP is a bit better, but is still well down on the leading dishes of the same length, now headed by the Handburger.

So that's it. Ten new recipes for your cooking pleasure, with some tricks and treats among them!

  1. I mentioned the witch's stove and monster oven in another post but here's my reply. These two appliances have been unlocked in the Android Halloween update. Also Pumpkin porridge, another 2012 Halloween recipe, is available on this update. That gives a cool 17 new recipes for players who haven't played last year's Halloween!

    1. Thanks a lot for that info. I will include it in the weekly update post later today! Is there any sign of the Witch Soup (Stove) and Candy Corn Pizza (Oven) as well?
