Valentine's Day 2014 recipe report

On Wednesday we were treated to the release of eight new recipes.

This in itself is good news, since it means a further 16 gems are there for the taking. However be wary: Valentine's content could be pulled shortly after the event as was the case with Halloween and Christmas stuff last year. Then again we could be following the path of Thanksgiving, where the relevant items were not removed. We can't take any chances!

 05/02/14 Goals update
 29/01/14 Chocolate update
 22/01/14 Cupid update

However, beyond the incentive of gems, there's not much to get excited about. That's because yet again the statistics for the goal recipes are poor, and the two Basic appliance additions are duds too. So this report is going to be quite negative (just a warning!)

You can analyse these recipes for yourself using my recipe list located here.

Let's start with the pair added to the Basic appliances...

New recipes on Basic appliances

The Sweetie Pie is a 1 hour dish situated on the Basic Oven. It has almost identical numbers to the Peppermint Cocoa (Cocoa Maker) from the Christmas goals, which means it's a waste of time.

The Sweet Pea Soup can be found on the Basic Stove. In the same vein, the soup is a carbon copy of the Turnip Pudding (Dim Sum Stove) from the Chinese New Year goals, another epic fail. As usual the NY Strip Steak (Basic Grill) is my recommendation, as it gives more across the board than the soup can muster, and does so in only 2 hours.

Moving swiftly on, the other six new recipes can only be unlocked by working through the Valentine's Day goals. The first appliance is the Decadent Stove...

Recipes on Decadent Stove

For some reason the recipes aboard this stove are not arranged left to right in order of duration (and use in the goals). I've no idea why.

The Chocolate Strawberries tie for third worst on portions, fifth worst on profit and are average for XP gain. In fact their numbers mirror those of the Seaweed Salad (Sunken Stove), not that that is a good thing.

The Chocolate Tart is another inefficient recipe. Only four dishes of 1 hour length offer less XP although it is a slight improvement on the Sweetie Pie. That's not setting the bar very high mind. Once you bag the mastery gems, concentrate on Portabello Mushrooms (Basic Grill) for profit and portions and the Thick Cut Bacon (Old West Oven) for XP gain if you are inclined to cook 1 hour recipes.

Last on this appliance is the Chocolate Lava Cake. As a customer I'd love this pudding, but as a restaurant owner it once again comes straight off the menu! It's 83 XP is just above the average among 8 hour duration dishes, but the portions and profit levels are right at the bottom end.

With these three recipes (plus the Sweetie Pie) we've once again received food which would be well suited to Bakery Story. In fact there's already a Chocolate Tart in the sister game. With no new dishes on the Basic Oven in Bakery for the best part of a year, why can't we get these recipes duplicated over there?

Getting back on-topic, the second new appliance is the Ruby Red Oven, which also holds three recipes...

Recipes on Ruby Red Oven

I'm delighted with the choice of dishes on this oven. They're all recipes you might actually see in a real restaurant, as opposed to some of the 'food' we've seen in the past (Panpipe Asparagus!) Yet again though, the stats quickly offset any spark of happiness.

The Prawn Cocktail is the second 3 hour addition in this update. And it is just as rubbish as the Sweet Pea Soup. It gives a tad more profit and portions, but this is balanced out by a little less XP. On this occasion Brown Butter Carrots (Christmas Feast Oven) is the comparable recipe.

The Mushroom Risotto no doubt fill up your belly, but will do nothing for your bank balance. The Chinese Dumplings (Dim Sum Stove) from last month has identical numbers, and was written off at the time, so the same fate falls upon this dish too.

The final new recipe is the Seared Ahi. It's twin is the Roasted Pheasant (Christmas Feast Oven). As was said in the Christmas goal recipes report, the stats for this one are rubbish regarding profit and portions, but for XP the Seared Ahi joins the pheasant as one of the leading XP recipes for 12 hour duration. There are only a few which earn more, but among them is the Tiramisu (Basic Oven) which trumps it both in this department and in the other fields too.

So yet again a downbeat recipe report generally. The predictability is tiring, to the point where I'm now just repeating identical recipe statistics from previous goal dishes. And even the regular appliance's new foods were inferior! Where is the love?!
