Suggestions Box (Sep 2013)

A new feature of the blog starting this week is my Suggestions Box. Every month I'm going to list five things I'd like to see added, altered or abolished from the game. Because even though my year of playing Restaurant Story clearly shows I love it, that doesn't mean it's perfect. Some of the ideas I'll air will be significant game changers while others will be low-key and irrelevant in the eyes of many of you readers.

In no particular order, here are this month's entries...

 #1: Gem spend confirmation button

This might just be the most sought-after addition of all. How many of us have lost gems because of a careless tap? I know that I have. It is infuriating when this happens as it can take a long time to save up gems and to lose them in one swift movement is crushing.

The logical solution to this problem would be to introduce a gem spend confirmation button.

Item sell confirmation button

We already have an item sell confirmation button for when you decide to sell an item, so it would be a pretty similar piece of coding to add for the programmers. However I doubt we'll ever get it. TeamLava need to make money. And mishaps like this help achieve that as some players will spend real money on gems in their haste to recoup those they've lost.

#2: More recipes on sparse appliances

There a few appliances which contain only one recipe. And these cookers tend to require parts to build. That's a lot of work for little reward. The Outdoor Grill, Nacho Machine and Smoker Pit are among those appliances which offer just one recipe.

It would be nice to have some more dishes on these appliances. The Outdoor Grill in particular is very frustrating. There have been numerous burger recipes added to other cookers over the last few months, when they'd have fitted well on the Outdoor Grill. Make these specialist appliances worth building!

 #3: More app updates

I started playing Restaurant Story on iOS in August 2012 when the World Games edition was in full swing. After that Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day all got their own versions.

Previous editions of Restaurant Story

But since February there have been no app updates for iOS users. Android players have had some updates in a new app, but these have been meager at best.

I'd like a new app a bit more often. This doesn't mean that further new content needs to be provided - just a new background, interface and so on. The likes of the Spring and Carnival themes could have had a fresh app as there was a plethora of new items for them.

I believe new apps (on iOS) need to be passed by Apple though, and maybe TeamLava would rather not go through the complexity of passing Apple's 'tests'. And quite frankly, who would blame them!

 #4: Filtering recipe list

The Basic appliances each contain a lot of recipes. This makes finding a specific dish quite difficult and time consuming. At present the only way to simplify searching is the tabs for each meal of the day - All, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert. Even then there are many recipes in certain categories.

So I suggest adding further filters. When I want a recipe which will take 3 hours to cook I have to scroll through looking for one. Allow us to view recipes of a certain duration only. This not only would make finding a 3 hour dish quicker, but also allow easier comparisions between recipes of the same length to find which ones yield the best XP, profit and portions.

 #5: Give the customers freedom!

It makes sense to place the Autumn Welcome Mat which was released last year directly in front of the door.

Autumn Welcome Mat in front of door

Yet the game doesn't like that. Because the mat is a floor decoration, customers cannot walk over it, so placing it in front of the door acts to block the entrance. Not good.

Perhaps the gamemakers could consider coding the mat to be a floor tile, without actually moving it to the floor tiles tab. Then the punters could stride over it, wiping their feet on the way.

The Balloon Arch and Garden Archway are another two items which suffer with the lack of freedom for customers. In those cases the people cannot walk under them, which is a shame. I accept this may require more effort from TeamLava to alter however.

  1. I only want to see #1 because I've lost 16x3 gems accidentally!

    1. I feel your pain! There's nothing as irritating in these games as throwing gems away accidentally. And TL live off it!

  2. Currently, the game doesn't allow transfering foood from one counter to a new one. Just imagine how useful it would be if we could change a counter without losing the food on it. With new decor being released every week, the ability to change the counter to suit the decor would be fascinating

  3. Another simple but very useful addition will be a "select all" option while sending gifts to neighbors

    1. Both your suggestions are very good vgc82. I think players have clamoured for the ability to move food between counters for a long time. It could even be placed in storage (or a fridge!) similarly to decor.

I'll definitely be covering both these ideas in future Suggestions Boxes :)

  4. I'm on level 99 now, so when there's not update/new goals, I spend most my time trying to 'perfect' each dish - it would be nice to be able to sort dishes by that. Either by having 'new' or dishes we haven't made that often come first or maybe having the dishes you've completed be shaded a slightly different colour.

    Ps - love your blog!

    1. Thanks!

That's a great idea. It can be frustrating having to scroll through to find the next recipe you want to cook for mastery :)

  5. This is GREAT!!! I have to agree that number 1 is the most important. Although I think they have it that way for a reason. Each time I've lost TEN gems in error, I've "considered" buying!!! I've only been playing a few weeks and I have to agree Number 1 is the item most needed.

  6. I have a suggestion if the 5 here are all you have thus far. I need to be able to SORT my Neighbors! I have LOTS of Neighbors. They all serve a purpose, but after playing for a while you definitely have some favorites that you click with. That respond to your requests, tip you every day and check in on your needs. Plus when you have a lot of neighbors and it is sorted alphabetically, those who's Restaurants begin with A or another character will be first! Every day all the time. Even when I decide to tip ALL my Ms, after each Tip the list goes back to the top and I have to sort through to find where I was. A sorting feature on the Neighbor List would be very helpful! Thanks for your great Blog! I LOVE this game! lol

    1. I've thought about the ability to sort the neighbour list before myself actually. It's definitely worth having, for all of the reasons you state.

That will definitely be included in a Suggestions Box at some point! :)

  7. Obviously, (1) is the big one, as I've lost 30-something gems this way and am quite bitter about it. Honestly, instead of paying to replace what I've lost, this policy makes me less likely to buy gems, because I worry about losing them this way and feeling scammed by TL. But I think we all kind of know it's never going to happen. :(
However, I think your "recipe sorting" suggestion would be a huge quality of life improvement and would love to see this instituted. Particularly since the lunch/dinner division is more confusing than helpful as a sorting tool; it's not clear why recipes end up in one or the other off these categories.

    1. I don't even tend to look at the categories anymore when searching for a recipe but resort to just scrolling through the 'all' tab with a general idea of where everything is.

It was workable at a lower level when there were less recipes unlocked for me, but now separating lunch from dinner (for example) is of little to no benefit on the stove and oven :)
